Celebrating 150 years of Mercy education in Macroom

On Saturday 11th March, St Joseph’s Primary School and St Mary’s Secondary School had a joint celebration of 150 years of Mercy education in Macroom.

The celebrations started with the blessing of our new school car park by Bishop Crean ably assisted by Aisling  from Third Class.

We then had our Mass in the Parish Church. The choir and orchestra from St. Mary’s Secondary School and the choir from St Joseph’s Primary School enhanced the liturgy with their beautiful music and singing. Bishop Crean paid tribute to the work that the sisters and staff had done in the school over the past 150 years. Staff past an present and pupils took part in the Liturgy. The final hymn was the Circle of Mercy, sung by both school choirs  summed up the spirit of the day.

We then went to St Mary’s Secondary School hall for the launch of the book on 150 yeard ofMarcy Education in Macroom. Mr Ciarán Cooke introduced the speakers; Sr Miriam Kerrisk, Provincial of the Mercy Sisters and Sr Brigid O’Connell, Principal of St. Joseph’s Primary School . Canon James O’Donnell launched the book on the 150 years of Mercy education. they are on sale for €10.

People were then treated to a cuppa and time to catch up with old friends. Roll books and photos of their time in St Mary’sand St. Joseph’s were on display. Smart phone were very useful to record those memorable moments.
