Green Flag

Green Flag Awards

Our school was awarded the Green flag on Thursday the 16th May at a ceremony in the Moran Convention Centre in Cork. Congratulations to Ms Browne and the Green Schools Committee for all their work to get the Green flag.

On the 16th of March Mrs. Browne, Bríd, myself and Jane went to the Silver Springs Hotel to accept our schools first green flag.

We left at 11.30am and when we arrived we received our complimentary bags. in the bag was a postcard, a tattoo and a bookmark promoting the Green Schools website.

We went upstairs to the function room. This is where the presentation was held. There was a noticeboard with projects, posters and newspaper articles. There was a green flag hanging up with a gigantic version of the bookmark.

By 2 pm it was time for food! We were starving. We were all seated and our menu was delicious. The choice was:

Chicken wrapped in bacon with a side of vegetables

or

Lasagne with side salad and chips

with

Baileys cheesecake with ice- cream and cream

We all chose the chicken, it was divine. The cheesecake was just heaven!

The ceremony began after the food. There was a man in a globe costume. It was very well presented. We took photographs with him. Examples of how much litter and waste was saved by each category. Litter and waste was the weight of 69 blue whales!Energy was to the moon and back 17 times!

It was a great experience. I was delighted to be chosen to represent the school.

Christmastime in St Joseph’s

We had a very busy day today.  Ms Cronin’s class, Ms Twomey’s  Class, Mrs O’Callaghan’s lass, Ms Fitzpatrick’s Class and Mrs Creedon’s Class performed for all the school. Our school band played some Christmas tunes and the school choir sang some of their songs from the Peace Proms Concert. Everyone really enjoyed the concert and it put everyone in the Christmas spirit.

The concert was just finished when  Santa and his helpers visited every class. They answered all the questions that boys and girls asked him about what list they were on!

The school band and choir took part in the Carol Service in the Parish Church on Sunday 16th of December. They played Little Donkey and Away in a Manger in the school band. They also sang The Gift, Child in Manger Born, and joined with St. Colman’s Boys National School to sing Silent Night in the Irish and Polish language. The congregation joined in English for the final verses. Everyone was very happy with the celebration.

A Gingerbread House

Robin helped his mother to make this beautiful gingerbread house.

Our Christmas tree

Our Christmas tree is in our school hall too. Sophie and Ben McCrory’s parents gave us this lovely tree.

Backpack Project

Advent is beginning this weekend and we are counting the days to Christmas. During Advent we are making a special effort to remember those who have a lot less that us and give a little to help children in Africa. We are taking part in The ‘Backpack Project” in association with ‘Mary’s Meals”. Children brought in backpacks that they are not using with some copies and pencils, pens, colouring pencils. These were sent to Malawi and will help some child to get a  better chance in their education.

We put the Backpacks in front of our crib. We got 158 Backpacks. Padraig Keogh collected them, and we helped to load them.

We have our Advent wreath in our school hall. We will also be looking at this website about Advent. Keep up to date with this lovely Advent calendar for children.

On Sunday 16th December there is a Carol Service in the Parish Church. Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes will be singing Christmas carols and playing the recorder. We have our Christmas Concert on Thursday the 20th of December in their school hall. Girls from Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes will also visit the local hospital and  sing for the patients.

All  pupils attending St Joseph’s were not born in Ireland so we have a lot of different Christmas traditions.  We share stories and customs and learn from each other about these customs. This makes the celebration of  Christmas  interesting as there are lots of ways of celebrating this great feast of the birth of Jesus.

Action Day for the Green Flag

Green Flag Action Day, Tidy Town Committee members visit the school

On Wednesday the 9th of November we had a great day of action for our Green Flag in St. Joseph’s . The children and staff all dressed in green and brought in waste free lunchboxes. Activities for the day included planting bulbs, creating craftwork from recycled materials, feeding the worms, a visit to the local Amenity Centre, checking our Eco Footprints, making paper logs and much more. Two representatives from the local Tidy Towns Committee gave a very informative talk to the Senior classes. Every child received either a bookmark or pencil donated by  the Cork County Council through the Macroom E Park staff. Some of our parents helped us with a litter pick up. We had a wonderful Action Day.

You can see more of the happenings in this video
